Car Keys by Brand and Type
Modern car keys are not all the same. The key and security system for your vehicle depends on its make, model, and year. Reading Car Locksmith handles many types of car keys on the road today, from basic transponder keys to complex smart keys.
We are a mobile automotive locksmith based in Reading, PA. Technicians come to you in fully equipped service vans. You do not need to tow your car or visit a shop.
Car Key Types We Work With
Most vehicles use one of the following key types:
-
Standard transponder keys
Traditional metal keys with a chip inside. The chip must be programmed so your car will start. -
Laser-cut (sidewinder) keys
Thicker keys with a milled groove down the center. Often paired with a transponder chip. -
Remote head keys and flip keys
The key blade and remote are combined into one unit that locks, unlocks, and sometimes opens the trunk. -
Smart keys and keyless fobs
Push‑to‑start and proximity systems that let you start the car with a button when the fob is inside.
We cut and program keys and remotes for many brands, including:
Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, GMC, Subaru, Volkswagen, Mazda, Chrysler, Buick, Acura, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Infiniti, Mitsubishi, Cadillac, and Volvo.

FAQs
Can you replace my car key if I lost all keys?
In many cases, yes. We can decode or look up the key information by VIN, cut a new key, and program it on site, as long as we have coverage for your vehicle’s brand and year.
Do I need to tow my car to you?
No. Reading Car Locksmith is fully mobile. We come to your location with the tools and equipment needed to cut and program car keys where your vehicle is parked.
How long does car key programming take?
Time varies by vehicle brand and key type. Many jobs take under an hour once the technician is on site, but some advanced systems or problem vehicles can take longer.
Can you make a spare smart key or fob?
In many cases, yes. Having at least one working spare is strongly recommended. We can often add a new smart key or fob while you still have a working one, which can be simpler than an all-keys-lost situation.
What if my ignition will not turn?
We can inspect the ignition, key, and related components. Depending on what we find, we may repair, rekey, or replace the ignition and provide a properly cut and programmed key that turns smoothly.
